Snow Job

Don't worry folks, I am still alive and digging out since Wednesday, from our second snowstorm.  The first 2011 Nor'easter storm dumped at least 15" of wet, sticky, heavy snow sa aming barangay. Paralyzed ang airport, walang pasok ang mga bata (snow day -yehey!) Wala ding pasok sa mga opis, but thanks to the internet, you can connect to your office PC and do an honest day's work.

The snow banks on the sidewalk is more than 6 feet of heavy snow. Sabi ni Harold, the Jew, heart attack stuff nga kung papaspasan mong i-shovel. Maraming Kanong obese ang sinusugod sa emergency dahil sa pagsho-shovel ng snow. 'Ray kopo call 911!"

Doon sa mga Pinoy na nagwi-wish na "sana po mag-snow sa Pilipinas", eh, maghunos dili kayo! After days of digging out ay siguradong sisigaw kayo ng: "Ibalik niyo ako sa Pilipinas!"

Food Not Bombs

Seven anti-nuclear activists started a collective that came to be known as Food Not Bombs in Cambridge, Massachusetts after the May 24, 1980 Seabrook Occupation Attempt. They recovered surplus food that couldn't be sold from grocery stores, bakers and food manufacturers. This food was distributed to housing projects, daycare centers and battered women's shelters. They also prepared vegetarian meals and shared it along with their literature at protests. After nearly 30 years, this small experiment grew into a worldwide movement with over 1,000 autonomous chapters taking action on every continent, with the exception of Antarctica. The founding chapter of Food Not Bombs is organizing a celebration to mark the first 30 years of Food Not Bombs on May 23, 2010 in Boston, Massachusetts. - foodnotbombs

Food Not Bombs is an all-volunteer global movement that shares free vegetarian meals as a protest to war and poverty. Each chapter collects surplus food that would otherwise go to waste from grocery stores, bakeries and markets, sometimes incorporating dumpster diving, then prepares community meals which are served for free to anyone who is hungry.

Members of Minor Mishap Marching Band (Austin, TX), the Leftist Marching Band (Portsmouth, NH), and the Walk Out Loud Parade (Allston, MA) joined forces at the Food not Bombs meal.

 

The Swan Boats of Boston

The weather is so nice, parang Maynila but not muggy that I decided to bring my lunch baon to the mini lake of Boston Common.  Isang lata ng Ligo sardines, itlog na maalat at kamatis atsaka kaning lamig sabay kamayan na.  As usual puno ng turista ang Swan Boats of Boston.  Gustong sumakay ni Bertha kaso bawal daw. Ang sabida pa eh  "read the sign kid."

For over 130 years, the Swan Boats have been a part of the Boston experience. As a welcome sign of Spring, they grace the waters of the Boston Public Garden, the first botanical garden in the United States. Famed in the stories Make Way for Ducklings and The Trumpet of the Swan, the Swan Boats are the only boats of their kind in the world.

The current Swan Boats carry around 20 passengers, seated on transverse benches, on a 15 minute figure of eight voyage around the lake. The boats are 30 ft long (9.1 m), and are formed of two pontoons in a catamaran  arrangement. They are manually propelled by a crewmember, often a high school or college student, who pedals and steers the craft from within the swan outline shell at the stern. 19-Gun Salute

 

Each year on the first Monday of June, the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company of Massachusetts reenacts a drumhead election on the Boston Common where its officers are chosen in a ceremony overseen by the organization's Commander in Chief - the Governor of the Commonwealth. This is the firing of the Howitzer cannons  announcing the entrance of Governor Deval Patrick.

Marine Week comes to Boston Common

From May 3 – 9, 2010 the city of Boston will open its doors to hundreds of Marines for Marine Week Boston!  This event will honor and recognize the contributions of Marines, including Boston-based hometown heroes and their families.

Spectators can expect to see Marines volunteering with community groups, hosting physical fitness challenges and sports clinics in city parks and showcasing state-of-the-art Marine vehicles, aircraft and equipment. Bostonians can also enjoy musical performances by various Marine musical ensembles throughout the week.

Having a Winter Blast!

The Frog Pond Skating Rink is now open till mid March. Four bucks a head lang po ang admission fee, libre ang bata trese pababa. Dahil nga binambo ng sobrang lamig sa buong US of A, e konti lang ang naglakas loob mag skating. Pati ang mga palaka sa Tadpole Playground ay nagday off at nagpahilatahilata na lang.

Hindi yata pwedeng siyang tawaging frogman. Frogfrog? Any suggestion?
