Arabic phrases of the week

الله عز وجل

Transliteration: Allah Azz wa jal

Translation: It refers to Allaah, meaning He is: "Mighty and the Majestic." It has the same meaning as Subhaana Wa Ta'aala. which means "Glorious and Exalted is He," 

Usage: Glorification of Allah or in communication or reference to Allah

سُبْحَانَ الَّذِي سَخَّرَ لَنَا هَذَا وَمَا كُنَّا لَهُ مُقْرِنِينَ وَإِنَّا إِلَى رَبِّنَا لَمُنْقَلِبُونَ

Transileration: Subhanalla-thee sakh-khara-lana haatha wa-ma kun-na lahoo muqrineena wa inna ila Rabbina la-mun-qali-boon.

Translation: Glory be to Him (Allah) who has brought this (vehicle) under our control though we were unable to control it. Sure, we are to return to our Lord.

Usage: When starting to travel/undertake a journey

الرحمن

Transliteration:Ar-Raḥmān

Translation:The Compassionate, The Beneficent, The Gracious

Usage: One of the 99 names of Allah. Beginning of every chapter except one, and in numerous other places. Name of a Surah in the Quran (Ar-Rahman) and often used ato bring better memory for the one who recites it often.

Hala Weekend

I just managed to lock myself out of my satellite channels so I am sitting here trying to figure what I did wrong. You know the last two months have been strange months - I am not sure if you will agree but, for me it seemed everything just did a 360. Perhaps, I thought, this is Allah making me think about what I want from life or just setting me on a new stepping stone, yeah - a bit of a turbulent step that was! I am one of those people that never plan - how much of a good thing that is, I am not sure but even if I did try and draw up a plan I either go off that plan very soon or can't get my mind to decide what I want to do. Yeah, sadly I am one of those people! 

Alas the seasons are changing, 2010 is coming to an end, the fortunate start winding up their hajj,  muslims around the world prepare for Eid-ul-Adha and then there's me -  sitting here trying to fix my satellite and going to leave you with this very beautiful song called "Marrat Sana" meaning "A year has passed"

1.  إني وجهت وجهي للذي فطر السماوات والأرض حنيفا وما أنا من المشركين

Transliteration: Inni Waj jahtu Wajhi ya lilladhi fatar-as-samawaati wa al arda hanifaa wa ma ana min-al-mushrikina.

Translation: For me,  I have set my face, firmly and truly, towards Him Who created the heavens and theearth, and never shall I give partners to Allah

Tagged for: Submission and dependence on Allah. It is a supplication normally reserved for salaat. Some will recite this before beginning the salaat.[Qur'an 6:79]

2. الحمد لله

Transliteration: Alhumdulillah or El7umdulillah

Translation: Praise be to Allah

Tagged for: Praises and thanks to Allah, Recited by the sneezer when he sneezes

Transliteration: Yar Hamukallah or Yar 7amu kallah

Translation: May Allah be merciful to you

Tagged for: This is the usual response to a sneezer who says "Alhamdulillah"  upon sneezing. The sneezer will then reply "Yahdeekum Allaahu wa yusliha baalakum" after the responder says "Yar Hamukallah"

1.  لا حول ولاقوة إلا بالله

Transliteration: La hawla wa la quwwata illa billah

Translation: There is no power nor strength save (expect) by Allah'

Tagged for: When struck by a calamity, or taken over by a situation beyond one's control - it is the placing of trust in the hands of Allah.

2.  انّا للہ و انّا الیه راجعون

Transliteration: Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji uun

Translation: To Allah we belong and to Him we must return

Arabic Phrases

I will be posting some Arabic words and their meanings whenever I can to assist those who are not familiar with Arabic words. I will be basing it on common Arabic phrases. You are most welcome to add in, by way of comments, as well.

1.  استغفر الله

Transliteration: ASTAGHFIRULLAH

Translation: Arabic expression meaning 'I ask forgiveness of Allah'

Tagged for: Forgiveness, At the sight or doing of wrong

2. براك الله فيك

Transliteration: BARAKALLAH FEEK or just BARAKALLAH

Translation: An expression which means 'May the blessings of Allah be upon you.'

Tagged for: Thanks, appreciation, gratitude, good sentiments, blessings. 

Related words: Shukran  (Thank you), Jazakallahu Khairan (May ALlah reward you in goodness)

3. حَسْبُنَا اللَّهُ وَنِعْمَ الْوَكِيلُ

Transliteration: Hasbunallah wa nimalwakil or Hasbun Allah wa ni'am al-wakil or also known as Hasbi Allah

Translation: "Allah suffices me and He is the best guardian."

Tagged for: Praises & trust in Allah (Qur'an 3:173)

If you one those people who loves to write in arabic but because it is not your primary language, you tend to struggle with grammar and writing or from a lack of tools, then this post will be most useful for you.

The first is a translator, that allows you to convert english words to arabic - the one drawback is that, the translator does not necessarily translate correctly so be sure to check your results each time.
